Va. Model Jury Instr. Civ. No. 35.020
Duration of Duty
A doctor who has accepted a patient for treatment has a duty to continue his services as long as
they are necessary. A doctor may not abandon his patient while his services are necessary unless
[he gives notice to the patient and makes arrangements for continuing treatment by another doctor; the
patient is afforded a reasonable opportunity to acquire the services needed from another doctor].
If a doctor fails to perform this duty, then he is negligent.
