(iii) Have direct access to an exit corridor
Interpretive Guidelines: §403.742(b)(1)(iii)
Patient rooms must have direct access to an exit corridor. There is no authority under
current regulations to approve a variance to this requirement. This means every patient
room must allow a patient to exit their room directly into a corridor that provides access
to an exit from the building. Access from the patient room to an exit corridor shall not
require passing through an intervening room to reach an exit access corridor.
Survey Procedures:
• Verify by a walk though, that patient rooms have access to an exit corridor.
