§ 494.180(g) Standard: Emergency coverage

(1) The governing body is responsible for

ensuring that the dialysis facility provides patients and staff with written instructions for

obtaining emergency medical care.

Interpretive Guidance § 494.180(g)(1):

The facility must provide written information to all patients, including home patients, regarding

who to call and how to obtain emergency medical care when away from the dialysis facility. The

patients should be able to contact a call service for a responsible staff member, physician, or on

call staff for dialysis-related emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In cases of need for

emergent medical care (e.g., severe chest pain, loss of consciousness, or uncontrollable

bleeding), patients should be instructed to call 911 for immediate medical care.

Instructions for obtaining medical care will vary depending on the event and should be

appropriate to the emergency condition.
