PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITY
As required by CLIA regulations, the LD is responsible for the overall operation and
administration of the laboratory. The LD must meet all applicable federal, state, local, CLIA, and
accrediting-body qualifications. Facilities are expected to consult with the National Laboratory
Administrator (NLA) to determine whether the LD meets those minimum requirements.
The LD is required to work within applicable Bureau directives as outlined by policy and the
NLA. Certain duties outlined by CLIA can be delegated in writing to an appropriately qualified
Bureau staff member (i.e., laboratory manager, laboratory supervisor, or other qualified
personnel).
