AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD BANKING
The CD will authorize autologous blood collection when it is medically necessary. For example,
autologous blood banking may reasonably be authorized for an inmate with an extremely rare
blood type who undergoes surgery that predictably will require a blood transfusion.

Surgical consultants may recommend, but not compel, the Bureau to authorize autologous blood
banking for an inmate prior to surgery. Recommendations by consultants will be considered on a
case-by-case basis.
