BOP Program Statement 6031.06 § 29
TELEHEALTH SERVICES
Each facility will establish and maintain the capability to provide telehealth services in support
of inmate health care delivery. Telehealth may be used to facilitate care by Bureau health care
providers and to connect inmates with specialty providers in the community. Facilities will
prioritize the use of telehealth when clinically appropriate as a means to enhance timely access to
care and to reduce security risks, staffing burdens, and transportation requirements associated
with off-site medical trips when such use is consistent with sound clinical judgment. Telehealth
encounters must meet applicable clinical standards, ensure inmate privacy, support continuity of
care, and be appropriately documented in the inmate’s EHR.

Telehealth emergency/triage services are utilized to reduce emergency community hospital trips.
Implementation of this service is mandatory once the contract is available at the institution.
