§544.72 Incentives.
The Warden shall establish a system of incentives to encourage an inmate to obtain a GED
credential.
Each institution will refer to the Program Statement First Step Act Assessments,
5356.01 6/22/2026 Federal Regulations from 28 CFR: this type. Implementing instructions: this type. 9
Programming, and Incentives for guidance regarding monetary incentives for inmates
participating in and completing the literacy program. Non-monetary incentives may also be
offered including pencils, pens, journals, “Student of the Month” or “Perfect Attendance”
awards, in an effort to encourage continued participation in the literacy program.
The literacy incentive award program must be explained to the inmates during the Admission
and Orientation (A&O) presentation, included in the Education Handbook, and posted on
bulletin boards.
