BOP Program Statement 1614.01 § 48

Security x-ray machines must be operated per the manufacturer’s guidelines. The department

head accountable for the x-ray equipment must ensure each staff member who operates an x-ray

machine is trained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. A copy of the operating

instructions must be posted by the machine.

X-ray machines must be tested for proper operation in accordance with the manufacturer’s

requirements. Documentation must be kept by the appropriate department head.

An area exposure badge must be provided for x-ray machines. The badge must be exchanged

quarterly; used badges must be sent to a laboratory for testing. The department head accountable

for x-ray equipment is responsible for providing, collecting, and testing badges. Test results must

be made available to staff operating the x-ray machines.

X-ray machines must be placed out of service if testing or exposure badges show radiation levels

that exceed the manufacturer’s specifications. The machine must remain out of service until

appropriate repairs are made to the machine.
