Rental and Purchase of Durable Medical Equipment

Rental and purchase of DME is covered under Part B for use in a patient’s home. DME

rendered to inpatients of a SNF or hospital is covered as part of the prospective payment

system and not separately payable. See the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, Chapter 15,

§§110 for coverage of Durable Medical Equipment and the Medicare Claims Processing

Manual, Chapter 20, “Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and

Supplies (DMEPOS),” for special billing instructions.
