S.C. Medicaid Hospice Services Provider Manual § 1

A hospice is a public agency or private organization or a subdivision of either of these that is

primarily engaged in providing care and services to terminally ill individuals, meets the Medicare

conditions of participation for hospices and has a valid provider contract. Hospice coverage for

South Carolina Medicaid beneficiaries is available for an unspecified number of days, subdivided

into election periods as follows: two periods of 90 days each, and an unlimited number of

subsequent periods of 60 days each. Benefit periods can be used consecutively or at different times

during the beneficiary’s life span. At the beginning of each period, the beneficiary must be certified

by a physician as terminally ill with a life expectancy of six months or less.
