Mich. Client Protection Fund Rule 1
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
• The purpose of the Michigan Client Protection Fund (Fund) is to promote public confidence in the administration of justice and integrity of the legal profession by reimbursing losses caused by the dishonest conduct of lawyers admitted and licensed to practice law in Michigan. Reimbursable losses must have occurred in the course of the lawyer-client or other fiduciary relationship between the lawyer and claimant and the reimbursable loss must have a significant contact with Michigan.
• For purposes of the Client Protection Fund Rules (Rules), the term “lawyer” includes a person:
• licensed to practice law in Michigan, including Federal Courts;
• admitted under a Special Certificate;
• admitted temporarily under MCR 8.126;
• admitted as a special legal consultant;
• admitted only in a non-United States jurisdiction but who is authorized to practice law in Michigan; or
• suspended or disbarred whom the client reasonably believed to be licensed to practice at the time the dishonest conduct occurred.
