Home Setting
Non-emergency transportation related to the terminal illness is the responsibility of the
hospice agency.
Routine, non-emergency transportation to obtain Medicaid covered services not related
to the terminal illness is available through the local MDHHS office for beneficiaries who
do not reside in a nursing facility (NF). The beneficiary/responsible party should contact
the MDHHS worker to determine the appropriate mode of non-emergency transportation
and make the necessary arrangements. The transportation provider, not the hospice,
bills the local MDHHS office for the transportation provided.
Non-emergency transportation by ambulance not related to the terminal illness requires a
physician's signed order to allow the ambulance provider to bill Medicaid directly.
Emergency transportation related to the terminal illness is the responsibility of the
hospice agency.
Emergency ambulance transportation not related to the terminal illness may be billed
directly to Medicaid by the ambulance provider.
