Kan. Medical Assistance Program Hospice Fee-for-Service Provider Manual § 8400, Inpatient Care
Inpatient Care
• Hospice must notify the KMAP PA department of any hospital admission. Care must be
available for pain control, symptom management, and respite purposes. It may be provided in a
participating hospice inpatient unit, hospital, or nursing facility the hospice has contracted with
that meets the special hospice standards regarding staffing and patient areas. Services provided in
an inpatient setting must conform to the written plan of care. General inpatient care may be
required for procedures necessary for pain control or acute or chronic symptom management
which cannot be provided in other settings.
• The provider must seek PA for inpatient hospital admissions that are for conditions unrelated to
the hospice diagnosis. Once the member has elected hospice services, the expectation is that
hospice will coordinate all services and will provide education to the member, family, and
caregivers regarding unforeseen changes in the member’s health condition.
• The hospice must assume responsibility for professional management of the resident’s hospice
services, in accordance with the hospice plan of care and make any arrangements necessary for
hospice-related inpatient care.
