D.C. Super. Ct. Juv. R. 101
Definitions
(a) "Civil action" refers to an action in the Civil Division of the Superior Court of the District
of Columbia.
(b) "Oath" includes affirmations.
(c) "Petition" means the legal document containing the allegations upon which the Court's
jurisdiction is based.
(d) "Party" means a child who is the subject of a Court proceeding; or the parent, guardian,
or legal custodian of such child; or any person denominated by a statute as a party in a
given case.
(e) "Traffic offense" used in § 16-2301(3)(C) means any violation of the Traffic and Motor
Vehicle Regulations for the District of Columbia or any violation of Title 40 of the D.C.
Code except 40 D.C. Code § 606 (negligent homicide).
(f) "Court" means the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
(g) "Division" means the Family Division of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
History
COMMENT D.C. Code § 16-2301 also defines many of the terms used in the Juvenile Rules. The effect of section (e) is to take all the defined offenses (except negligent homicide) out of the jurisdiction of the Family Division (D.C. Code § 11-1101(13) and SCR-Juvenile 1).
