ThecodesusedforsubmittingclaimsforservicesprovidedtoHealthFirstColoradomembersrepresentservicesthatareapprovedbytheCentersforMedicare&MedicaidServices(CMS)andservicesthatmaybeprovidedbyanenrolledHealthFirstColoradoprovider.
TheHealthcareCommonProceduralCodingSystem(HCPCS)isdividedintotwo(2)principalsubsystems,referredtoaslevelIandlevelIIoftheHCPCS.
LevelIoftheHCPCSiscomprisedofCurrentProceduralTerminology(CPT),anumericcodingsystemmaintainedbytheAmericanMedicalAssociation(AMA).
TheCPTisauniformcodingsystemconsistingofdescriptivetermsandidentifyingcodesthatareusedprimarilytoidentifymedicalservicesandproceduresfurnishedbyphysiciansandotherhealthcareprofessionals.
LevelIIoftheHCPCSisastandardizedcodingsystemthatisusedprimarilytoidentifyproducts,supplies,andservicesnotincludedintheCPTcodes,suchasambulanceservicesanddurablemedicalequipment,prosthetics,orthotics,andsupplies(DMEPOS)whenusedoutsideaphysician'soffice.LevelIIcodesarealsoreferredtoasalpha-numericcodesbecausetheyconsistofasinglealphabeticalletterfollowedbyfour(4)numericdigits,whileCPTcodesareidentifiedusingfive(5)numericdigits.
