Medi-Cal Provider Manual, Part 2, Hospice Care, introduction
Hospice Care
Medi-Cal covers medically necessary hospice services. Hospice services involve medical
multidisciplinary care designed to meet the unique needs of terminally ill Medi-Cal members.
Hospice services are used to alleviate pain and suffering and treat symptoms rather than to
cure illnesses. Hospice items and services are directed toward the physical, psychological,
social, and spiritual needs of the Medi-Cal member and their family unit. Medical and nursing
services are designed to maximize the Medi-Cal member’s comfort, alertness, and
independence so that the Medi-Cal member can reside in the home as long as possible.
To bill for hospice services, hospice providers must be enrolled in Medi-Cal. All claims for
Medi-Cal hospice services are submitted using the UB-04 claim form. For additional hospice
billing procedures and claim form instructions, refer to the appropriate Part 2 outpatient
services manual.
