Function of the Bailiff
During your deliberations, a bailiff will be appointed to keep you together and prevent conversation between you and any other persons. The bailiff will provide meals [and lodging] and will make phone calls for you if necessary. The bailiff cannot answer any questions about this case or provide you with any information, books or materials. The bailiff, as well as all other persons, is forbidden to communicate in any way or manner with any member of the jury on any subject touching the merits of this case.
Bear in mind also that you are never to reveal to any person--not even to the bailiff or to me--how the jury stands, numerically or otherwise, on the question of guilt or innocence of the accused, until authorized by the court.
Any violation of any item about which I have cautioned you is to be reported to the court.
